It looks like I may need to close this ticket since I was probably been doing something stupid.
I was logged into the back-end using Firefox and then when I visited the front-end (also using Firefox) I was not realizing that I was actually logged in to the front-end as well. Since I was logged in as a super user it appear to have been showing me the "Special" status articles.
I opened a different browser window that I am NOT logged into and it appears that the "Special" access results are NOT being given to me. So, apparently everything is working as I want it to.
Although I am now testing with Chrome as the browser that is NOT logged in and in the various languages I am having some search queries not returning any results for words that are definitely contained in articles.
